Abstract

The texts on t-shirts have become a significant fashion statement in modern days. Although the texts are of various types, in this paper I am going to analyse how they can be the voice of protest against the stereotypical patriarchal society. The texts on t-shirts mirror how the language acts as a crucial medium to bring out social issues in a distinctive way. With time, the language becomes a safer place against the language of abuse. The paper here concentrates on how modern agendas specially related to gender equation, are given more importance and shown on t-shirts as well as providing youth to express themselves in sartorial elegance. It represents the multi-layered representation of language in popular culture.

  • Ananya Chowdhury

    Ananya Chowdhury is an independent researcher and an educator who completed her masters in English Literature in 2022 from Sarojini Naidu College for Women and B. Ed in 2024. Her research interests include gender, trauma and psychoanalysis. Her research paper, “Studying Trauma, Personal Loss, Flashback and Recurring Tragedy during World War II: A Critical Analysis of the Grave of the Fireflies” was published in 2024. Her poems were selected in different anthologies. Recently, her short story, “A Cake” also got selected for the issue of TMYS Review June 2025.
