Abstract

This article explores the profound influence of American sexual culture on contemporary India, particularly in urban contexts. Tracing its roots from the Stonewall Riots and subsequent Pride movements, the study highlights how American models of protest, self-affirmation, and queer cultural expression have inspired Indian youth to embrace visibility and activism. The dissemination of queer literature, music, and theory, alongside technological globalization, has enabled educated urban Indians to adopt Westernized identities and participate in Pride marches. However, this cultural shift remains limited to privileged classes, leaving marginalized groups such as hijras largely excluded and socially alienated. The paper argues that while American activism catalyzed queer discourse in India, deep-seated socio-economic, caste, and religious divisions restrict the formation of a truly inclusive sexual culture. Ultimately, the article reflects on the tensions between global queer identities and local realities, emphasizing the need for intersectional approaches in Indian queer studies.
