Abstract

This paper is divided into two parts. Whereas the first part theorises the role of order and disorder in literature, the second one throws light on Thomas Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge from the perspective which has been theorised in the first part. In the novel, the Mayor’s transitions create disorder that plays a very important role in calling in the death of the eponymous character.
